The story

The ‘Tru Plant’ Witches got back to winning ways at Foxhall on Thursday night as they beat Redcar 48-42 in the Championship.

With three debutants in the team the home side started strongly and found themselves eight points up after four heats. However, the away side kept on battling away and never gave up with the Witches unable to stretch their lead further and the Bears ensured they took a point from the meeting after a win in the final heat. Rory Schlein top scored with 14 for the Witches.

It was the perfect start for the home side who recorded a 5-1 thanks to Schlein and Cameron Heeps. It was not the start debutant Coty Garcia had hoped for in heat two as he hit the tapes and was forced to go from 15 metres in the re-run. Mikkel B Andersen won the re-run but it was a fine effort from Garcia as he worked his way into second to sandwich himself in-between the two visiting reserves as Redcar hit a 4-2. However, the hosts responded in heat three with another maximum thanks to new signing Mark Riss and Nico Covatti. Schlein showed his class in heat four as he picked off Thomas Jorgensen on the back straight of the third lap to hit the front with Garcia third for a 4-2 to put the home side 16-8 up.

There was bad luck for Covatti in heat five as led but suffered machinery problems leaving the away side to pick up a 4-2 with Riss in second. Heeps produced a fantastic ride in heat six as he hunted down Jorgensen before flying around him on the third turn of the third lap to win with Schlein third for another home heat advantage. Riss was enjoying a productive debut and won heat seven as the points were shared for the first time on the evening. Dimitri Berge won heat eight for the away side ahead of Garcia and Jordan Stewart did well to hold off Heeps for third on the line meaning the away side reduced the Witches’ lead to just six points at 27-21.

Jorgensen produced a good ride in heat nine to pass Riss on the second lap but partner Mikkel B Andersen retired meaning a 3-3. Jonas B Andersen held off pressure from Schlein to win heat 10 in another shared heat with the Witches not being able to shake the Bears off. Covatti won heat 11 as the run of 3-3’s continued. Jorgensen was put in heat 12 as a tactical substitute and he duly won with Berge third for a 4-2 to the away side to make the score 38-34 with three heats to race.

Jorgensen was back out in heat 13 but didn’t last long as he fell on the first turn and was excluded from the re-run. Schlein won the re-staging ahead of Ben Barker with Heeps third to edge the Witches closer to victory. Jonas B Andersen won heat 14 but it was a share of the points meaning the home side had confirmed victory on the night with a race to spare. The Witches pair of Schlein and Covatti gated in the final heat of the night but allowed Jorgensen through early on as he won to ensure his side took a point from the meeting with the final score 48-42.

West Property Management and DJ Evans Rider of the Night

Debutant Mark Riss won the DJ Evans Rider of the Night award after scoring 12 whilst Schlein took the West Property Management award after scoring 14.

Key moment

Jorgensen was a man in form for Redcar on the night and his exclusion in heat 13 was a big moment in the meeting with the Bears just four behind. The Witches capitalised as Schlein won the re-run with Heeps third for a 4-2 that put the home side on the brink of victory.

Next meeting

The Witches are next in action at Somerset on Friday 20th July as Rory Schlein and Nico Covatti compete for the Championship Pairs title.
