THE REPORT
Jake Mulford won Tiger’s Academy Open on Thursday night at Foxhall.
The best of the British youth scene was on show in Suffolk in what was a tribute meeting to John Louis. Mulford went through the night unbeaten to lift the trophy and was joined on the podium by Cooper Rushen and Vinnie Foord. Ben Trigger and Jordy Loftus won Tiger’s Pairs Final which was contested by the top two scoring pairs.
Jody Scott won heat one as Ace Pijper nipped up the inside of Senna Summers for second. Mulford won heat two and heat three was stopped as Seth Norman was excluded after spinning into the fence on the second turn. The re-run was also stopped as Harrison Rogers fell. Rushen was a convincing winner at the third attempt. Foord and Trigger traded moves at the front in heat four, but Foord made his move stick to win the race.
Mulford picked up another win in heat five as Trigger fended off Scott for second. Heat six was stopped as Rogers hit the deck at the back with the race awarded to Ryan Ingram who led at the time of the stoppage. Rushen won heat seven ahead of Foord as Loftus was the winner of heat eight.
Scott went through the tapes in heat nine and started from 15 metres. Rushen made it three wins from three in the re-run as Scott came from 15 metres for a point. Mulford continued his unbeaten start in heat 10 with another win. Ace Pijper won heat 11 as Jack Shimelt packed up on the final lap whilst in second allowing Stene Pijper through. Trigger got his first win of the night in heat 12 with Loftus following him across the line in second.
Scott returned to winning ways in heat 13 as Trigger became the first rider to beat Rushen in heat 14. Trigger made the start and as Rushen hit the front going into the third turn of the opening lap, he got out of shape coming out of the fourth turn and did well to stay on the bike as he was forced to settle for second. Mulford maintained his perfect record in heat 15 as Loftus held off Foord to take the chequered flag in heat 16.
Despite his best efforts, Scott couldn’t find a way past winner Foord in heat 17 before Summers ended his night with a win in heat 18. Trigger picked up another three points in heat 19 to secure his place in the final and Mulford also booked his spot in the final with another win in heat 20 as Rushen couldn’t find a way past Loftus for second.
Foord made the gate in the semi-final, but Rushen built up speed and stormed under him late on in the race to win, with both riders qualifying for the final.
Mulford was untouchable in the final to secure the title as Rushen won the battle against Foord again to finish second on the podium.
Tiger’s Pairs Final was stopped with Summers falling on the third and fourth turn of the opening lap. The referee awarded the race meaning Trigger and Loftus took home that accolade.
RITCHIE HAWKINS REACTION
Ipswich ‘Tru7 Group’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins reflects on Thursday’s Tiger’s Academy Open…
“I thought it was a really enjoyable night and there was a decent crowd in supporting them. I know the youngsters appreciated it and I think they all got a lot out of it. There were some talented riders on show and with the right guidance which hopefully we have helped with tonight with everything going on, they can use it and progress. I was just speaking to Jake who was the pre-meeting favourite and the most experienced here and he was saying how much he took from the meeting, how good it was for him and how much he has learnt. The boys seemed to enjoy it, and the idea is they take a lot from it and provide entertainment.
“We know how good Cooper is, Jake was the favourite, he went through the card and rides this place well, I expected that from him, but he had to go out and do it. We know what an immense talent Cooper is, and he provided a lot of the entertainment, we know how good he will be. Jordy Loftus is a rider I have not seen ride before and I thought he did really well after a tough opening ride, he progressed through the meeting. I definitely need to mention Seth Norman on his 15th birthday; he made one of the best starts I have seen all season from gate four in his first one! I know he didn’t make it round, but he improved every race and looked a good talent and is one to watch out for next year.”
