Ipswich icon Danny King is proud to continue leading the Tru7 Group Witches into an exciting new era after being confirmed as their first signing and captain for the 2027 Rowe Motor Oil Premiership season.
Following surgery to fix a niggling hand injury last winter, King enjoyed one of his best seasons for several years as he led the Witches into the Premiership Knockout Cup Final and the play-off semi-finals.
His efforts saw him scoop four prizes at last night’s Ipswich end-of-season awards, organised by the Ipswich Speedway Supporters Club, including the coveted Rider of the Season title, voted for by the fans.
King can’t wait to start what will be his 18th season at Foxhall across multiple spells since he first joined the Witches for the 2003 season.
He said: “I am proud and happy to be back for my 18th season. Loyalty goes a long way, and it works both ways.
“For me, it’s personal. I look at Ipswich as my home club. I know I am not from Ipswich, but they are the ones that gave me my start and they have always stuck by me through thick and thin.
“It’s a club I hold very close to my heart. I am proud to be a Witch, and I just want to continue doing that. If I can help the club in any way, whether it be on or off the track, or helping the youngsters, I will do whatever I can.
“They gave me my chance when I was younger, and I never forgot it. I am pleased that even with the new management, we are continuing this relationship. Hopefully they can see what I bring to the club, and I am proud and pleased to be back for another season.”
King is delighted to remain a key part of the Witches as they race into a new era under chairman Richard Coleman, general manager Andrew Chisholm and team manager Paul Hurry following Mayfield’s acquisition of the club just weeks before the 2026 season got underway.
He said: “I think they have done a brilliant job. Despite taking over in the way they did and as late as they did, I think we can say we had a successful 2026 season with the way things panned out and the way the season started.
“I think they should be very happy and very proud of what they have done. I think they have learned a lot this year, and I am excited to see what they have planned for next year.
“They are really good guys, and you can see they have speedway at heart and want the best for the Witches.”
While all six of his 2027 teammates are yet to be revealed, King is enthused about what’s in store for next season as the 2025 Premiership champions bid to regain their crown.
The former British champion said: “I am very excited. From what I have heard, I think it’s a great-looking team. I think the fans are going to be happy, and it’s a team that’s more than capable of challenging for silverware again. That’s going to be the main goal – to get that title back.”
