THE PREVIEW

The Witches return to Foxhall on Thursday night as they welcome the Oxford Spires in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership.

Ipswich were at Belle Vue on Monday where they recorded their first ever league win at the National Speedway Stadium after coming out on top in a Super Heat in Manchester. That win ended the Aces’ unbeaten home record in the league and put the Witches a point clear at the top of the table with just six meetings left before the play-offs begin.

Team manager Ritchie Hawkins has made a slight tweak to the riding order with Adam Ellis riding at number two and Danny King at number three for this fixture. A win for Suffolk side on Thursday would see them pick up the aggregate bonus point too, after a 46-44 win away at Oxford last month.

MANAGER’S NOTES

Ipswich ‘Tru7 Group’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…

“Oxford have had a tough year, and we will go into the meeting similar to the last home meeting against Birmingham where we are expected to win and win comfortably. It is the same situation for us; we know from the King’s Lynn cup meeting that we cannot let standards slip. We put on a brilliant show at Belle Vue on Monday and want to keep this momentum going and enjoy our racing. That is our aim on Thursday.

“We have swapped Adam and Danny around, Danny hasn’t ridden much, if at all, with Tom this season so we will see how that partnership goes. I know Adam and Jason can ride very well together, they have done it before and won a league title together. If we get to a situation next month where we have to have a change in riding order, then it is something to look at and it is a great opportunity to do it against Oxford.”

OXFORD SPIRES

Tipped by many to struggle in 2025, the Spires haven’t been able to prove the doubters wrong this season and sit sixth, well out of the play-off picture. The visitors have only picked up four league wins so far, all of which have come against bottom side Birmingham. Their last visit to Suffolk won’t fill them with confidence either as they succumbed to a 40-point defeat.

The Spires have made a change to the side since last facing the Witches with Victor Palovaara replacing Craig Cook but Palovaara is ill and Mitch McDiarmid guests in his place. Richard Lawson guests in place of Erik Riss at number two and rider replacement is in operation at three for Rohan Tungate who has injured his shoulder.

LAST TIME WE MET IN SUFFOLK

Ipswich last welcomed Oxford to Foxhall back in April of this year and the Witches demolished the Spires, racing to a 65-25 victory. With Jason Doyle and Danny King unbeaten by an opponent and Tom Brennan and Emil Sayfutdinov narrowly missing out on paid maximums, the visitors had no answer. It was a real demolition job, with every home rider enjoying being involved in maximum heats, as the Witches continued their unbeaten start to the year. With Justin Sedgmen guesting for the injured Erik Riss and rider replacement in operation for the also injured Peter Kildemand, the visitors arrived on the back foot, but they will still be disappointed by the performances of some of their star riders, who offered little resistance.

SECOND HALF

A second half between Ipswich Academy and Mildenhall Academy will follow the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership fixture.
