The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches have been confirmed as Premiership Pairs winners after the cancellation of the sixth and final round at Leicester on Monday.
The Suffolk side were 12 points clear of Belle Vue following Round 5 at the National Speedway Stadium last week, having won meetings at Foxhall, King’s Lynn and Wolverhampton earlier this summer.
Unfortunately, the weather intervened on several occasions with the round initially planned for Sheffield, which was subsequently moved to Leicester due to stadium availability issues at Owlerton.
Ipswich therefore take the title having been represented throughout the series by Jason Doyle, who was joined by Danny King, Troy Batchelor and Erik Riss, with Danyon Hume and Anders Rowe as Rising Stars.
Promoter Chris Louis said: “After starting with a fifth place in the first round, to go three unbeaten and a second place in the next four, I think it would be hard for anybody to argue that we don’t deserve to win the competition.
“We have used a bit of a squad, obviously Jason has been the mainstay of that and scored a lot of the points, but he’s been backed up by Danny, Troy, Erik and the reserves.
“It’s been a good team effort and the lads fully deserve some silverware.”
The sixth round of the Premiership Pairs at Leicester due to be raced on Monday 31st October has been called off, with the track still having not dried out after recent heavy rainfall.
All the details ahead of the sixth round of the Premiership Pairs.

THE STORY
The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches pairing heads to Leicester on Monday for the final round of the Premiership Pairs. The round was due to be held at Sheffield but has been moved to Leicester due to stadium unavailability. Ipswich lead the competition and hold a 12-point advantage going into the final fixture. Only Belle Vue can overhaul the Witches and the Aces would need to win at Leicester and hope the Witches finish bottom to level the overall scores at the top of the table. Despite Ipswich having won three rounds of the competition, should the overall standings be level, a run-off for the title would take place.
After finishing second at the National Speedway Stadium in Round 5 last Thursday, team manager Ritchie Hawkins sticks with the ever-present Jason Doyle who has led the side impeccably throughout the tournament. Troy Batchelor comes in for Erik Riss, with Batchelor partnering Doyle to glory in Rounds 2 and 4, and the duo will be aiming for a hat-trick at Leicester. Anders Rowe continues as the ‘Rising Star’ and is guaranteed at least one ride as part of the regulations.
HOW IT WORKS
The competition is a new addition to the calendar for 2022 with all six Premiership clubs staging a round throughout the season. Each club will have two riders and a ‘Rising Star’ at each round with scores accumulated over all six rounds before the overall aggregate winner is declared after the final round of the competition at Belle Vue in September. 12 points will be awarded to each round winner, eight points to second, six points to third, four points to fourth, two points to fifth and no points to sixth.
There will be 15 qualifying heats of action at each round with the top scoring team from the qualifying heats going directly to the final. The teams placed in second and third will compete in a semi-final with the winning side from that race progressing to the final to decide the round winners. Each team has five qualifying heats each and the ‘Rising Star’ must take at least one ride during the meeting. The points scoring system for the competition in each race will be 4-3-2-0.
FROM THE BOSS
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…
“We are in position A1 and we know what we need to do. Yes, if we avoid last place, we are the overall winners, but we have got to go there looking to win another round. We have got a very strong pairing in Jason Doyle and Troy Batchelor so we can go there with confidence.
“They have won two rounds out of two when they have been paired together this year so we are confident we can do well in the actual round on its own and get another win whilst keeping an eye on the overall scores and making sure we take that as well.”
THE LINE-UP
Second-placed Belle Vue stick with the line-up that won Round 5 at the National Speedway Stadium with Brady Kurtz and Matej Zagar tasked with winning another round to keep their slim title hopes alive. The battle for bronze is between King’s Lynn and Sheffield. The Stars bring in Richie Worrall, a Leicester rider in the Championship, to partner Richard Lawson. The Tigers make one change, bringing in captain Kyle Howarth to partner Jack Holder. Peterborough stick with Chris Harris and Benjamin Basso whilst Wolverhampton also keep faith with their line-up of Sam Masters and Ryan Douglas.

THE STORY
The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches pairing of Jason Doyle and Erik Riss finished as runners-up in Round 5 of the Premiership Pairs at Belle Vue on Thursday night.
Ipswich had won the last three rounds of the competition and were the leaders heading to Manchester. The hosts topped the qualifying scores ahead of the Witches to progress directly to the final before Ipswich beat Peterborough in the semi-final. However, there was no stopping the Aces duo in the final as they raced to victory on the night, meaning Ipswich need just a fifth-place finish on Monday in the final round at Leicester to secure victory in the competition as they maintained their 12-point lead.
Stand-in team manager Chris Louis decided to use Rising Star Anders Rowe in heat three as Doyle flew from the gate to win the race ahead of Frederik Jakobsen with Rowe picking up third after Richard Lawson retired early on in the race, meaning a 6-3 heat advantage over King’s Lynn.
Doyle was a comfortable winner in heat five, but partner Riss retired at the back meaning a 4-5 to Sheffield.
Riss made the start in heat eight and hit the first turn ahead with Doyle at the back, but the Australian made a smart cut back on the second turn to fly into third before going under Sam Masters at the end of the opening lap to join Riss at the front as the Witches duo raced to a 7-2 maximum over Wolverhampton.
Doyle was in a class of his own in heat 11 as he won with ease ahead of Chris Harris and Riss picked up third for a 6-3 to Ipswich over Peterborough.
Belle Vue hit a 7-2 maximum over the Witches in heat 15 meaning they would progress directly to the final whilst the Witches would contest the semi-final.
There was a delay to proceedings as those behind the scenes decided who joined Ipswich in the semi-final with Peterborough, Sheffield and Wolverhampton tied on 20 points. Eventually after a ballot took place, it was the Panthers who were the opponents. The following day, the SCB released a statement apologising to Wolverhampton after Wolves should have qualified via the countback system and the Round 5 positions were adjusted.
Doyle was once again clear out front in the semi-final but with Harris second and Benjamin Basso third it looked like the Witches were heading out. However, Harris got out of shape on the final turn and took a nasty fall, meaning Ipswich progressed to the final.
The Aces were too good for the Witches in the final as they delighted their home crowd with a maximum to secure victory on the night, meaning it all goes down to the final round at Leicester on Monday.
REACTION FROM THE PROMOTER
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches promoter Chris Louis reflects on Thursday’s fifth round at Belle Vue.
“It was a pretty solid performance. Anders came in early doors and picked up two points. The score chart might record that Lawson had a breakdown, but Anders was third anyway at that time and made a decent start, so I was really happy with that.
“Erik struggled all night but kept plugging away and picked up vital points for heat advantages. Jason was Jason and was so determined to win. It was a good solid performance all round. Yeah, we rode our luck in the semi-final at the end with Bomber (Chris Harris) crashing and we send our best wishes to him, we hope he is ok.
“There is no shame in finishing second to Belle Vue, they are hard to beat around here, particularly Brady and Zagar, so I was pleased with the end result. At the end of the day, we maintained our 12-point lead, it is a different team chasing now but to come in with a 12-point lead and leave with a 12-point lead, I’m happy with that.
“It is fairly straight forward for Monday, Belle Vue will need to win and if they do we need to avoid finishing last otherwise there will be a run-off. You can’t say it is impossible for us to finish last, even though we have had three wins and a second in the last four rounds. We were second from bottom in the opening round, so it can happen. We have got to go there determined to do well.”
WHAT IT MEANS
Ipswich pick up eight points and maintain their 12-point lead going into the final round after finishing as runners-up at the National Speedway Stadium. Only Belle Vue can now match Ipswich’s points total with victory on Monday night, meaning Ipswich need just a fifth-placed finish at Leicester to secure the title.

THE STORY
The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches pairing heads to Manchester on Thursday for the fifth round of the Premiership Pairs. The round at the National Speedway Stadium was due to be the final one of the tournament, but with Tuesday’s fixture at Leicester postponed, there remains one round to be raced after Thursday’s meeting. Ipswich lead the competition having won the last three rounds at Ipswich, King’s Lynn and Wolverhampton. The lead is a healthy one with second place King’s Lynn 12 points behind, but the Stars, Sheffield and Belle Vue can all still catch the Witches with a strong fifth round showing at Belle Vue as they look to close the gap at the top before the sixth round. Wolverhampton and Peterborough are both out of contention.
Team manager Ritchie Hawkins once again fields number one Jason Doyle for this round whilst Erik Riss comes in for Troy Batchelor with Anders Rowe as the ‘Rising Star’. Doyle has been sublime everywhere he has gone in British speedway this season and has been ever-present in this competition racking up the points. Riss makes his debut in the competition having recently returned to the side after his ankle injury. Rowe is guaranteed at least one ride as part of the regulations.

FROM THE BOSS
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…
“We will have another go at the fifth round and it is still the same situation. We want to put in another good performance to keep ourselves right in there going into the last round. The weather forecast is looking good which is positive.
“We have chosen to put Erik in this round, he is worth a shot around Belle Vue. We have been there a couple of times this year, Danny (King) has been there a few times and not looked quick enough and the same applies to Troy, so we have nothing to lose by putting Erik in. We would have used him in the earlier rounds if the rules allowed at some points. It is great to have him back in the team and to give him another meeting and I’m sure they will put in a good performance.”
THE LINE-UP
Sheffield have Grand Prix rider Jack Holder in their side with Justin Sedgmen coming in for Adam Ellis for his first appearance in the competition. King’s Lynn were due to bring in Richie Worrall for this round but Frederik Jakobsen is now a late replacement for Worrall. He is partnered by Richard Lawson with the Stars sitting second in the table going into the penultimate round. The recently crowned Premiership champions and hosts Belle Vue have chosen skipper Brady Kurtz and have brought in Matej Zagar to replace the injured Max Fricke. Peterborough have ever-present Chris Harris in their pair with Benjamin Basso in for his debut alongside him. Wolves stick with Sam Masters and he is joined by Ryan Douglas for this round.

King partnered Doyle to victory in Round 3 at King’s Lynn and is back in the side for the trip to Leicester. The skipper rode for the Lions in 2017 and 2018 whilst Rowe was also a Lion earlier in 2022 and is guaranteed at least one ride as part of the regulations.

FROM THE BOSS
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…
“We will look to win the meeting again and seal the overall win in the fifth round but it will be another strong line-up so it will be tough to win another round. We need to get as many points as possible to make sure we go into the last round in as strong a position as possible. We have Doyley and Danny, so I feel like we have a strong pairing.
“We had a little fitness doubt over Danny with his broken finger, but he came through Monday at Sheffield fully fit, and he has important meetings with Poole as well. Danny has been at Leicester a few times with Poole this year and has done very well.
“It is probably better for everyone other than Sheffield because it is an even playing field and there is no home track advantage.”
THE LINE-UP
Sheffield have Grand Prix rider Jack Holder in their side alongside Adam Ellis for the second round running. King’s Lynn have brought in Richie Worrall for this round who rides for Leicester in the Championship, and he is partnered by Richard Lawson with the Stars sitting second in the table going into the penultimate round. The recently crowned Premiership champions Belle Vue have chosen skipper Brady Kurtz and have brought in Matej Zagar to replace the injured Max Fricke. The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches were beaten in their final Premiership fixture of the season at Sheffield on Monday night.
With the play-offs already completed and Belle Vue having lifted the Premiership title, there was nothing riding on the fixture. The Tigers were without Tobiasz Musielak and Kyle Howarth with Wolves’ Sam Masters guesting in place of Musielak and rider replacement in operation at number four. The visitors lost Paul Starke on the day after he broke down on his way to the stadium, with Lee Complin guesting at reserve. After a delayed start to proceedings, Sheffield eased to a comfortable victory. Jason Doyle top scored with 15+1.
Doyle won a shared heat one before the hosts went ahead in heat two with a 4-2 as Connor Mountain won and Complin held second ahead of Justin Sedgmen. Danny King was excluded in heat three as he went through the tapes and Sheffield hit a 5-1 in the re-run. The home team recorded another maximum in heat four to make it 17-7.
Doyle won heat five as the points were shared before Sheffield hit another 5-1 in heat six. Sheffield guest Masters won heat seven in a 3-3 and there was another shared heat in heat eight leaving the home side 31-17 in front.
Doyle came in as a tactical substitute in heat nine and duly won in a third consecutive 3-3. Jack Holder won heat 10 as King passed Lewis Kerr for second to limit the Tigers to a 4-2. Masters was the first man to beat Doyle as he won heat 11 in another heat advantage to Sheffield. King produced a spectacular final bend to beat Adam Ellis to the chequered flag in heat 12 in a 3-3, making the score 45-27.
Holder won heat 13 ahead of Doyle with Masters third for a 4-2 to the hosts. Heat 14 ended with another heat advantage to the Tigers as the Witches ended the night with a 1-5 courtesy of King and Doyle, making the final score 54-36 to Sheffield.
REACTION FROM THE BOSS
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins reflects on Monday’s defeat at Sheffield.
“The track staff at Sheffield did an amazing job to get the meeting on, they had stock cars here last night and bad weather, and they couldn’t get on the track early because of dog racing. They did a brilliant job to get it on and the track was good.
“It wasn’t a great team performance, and it was a bad result. Doyley was class again, Danny put himself back touching the tapes in his first race but in his last three rides found the setup and looked good and it was quick as he has been for a while. I felt Erik was there or thereabouts but didn’t quite have that next step to score more points.
“Thank you to Lee Complin for coming in at short notice and he rode as he always does, with 100% commitment. Next season for Lee, he will be back on the pace we know he is capable of.
“We have got two more meetings this week and we are in a great position in the Pairs, and we need to carry that on tomorrow at Leicester and put in a strong showing. Danny has ridden quite a lot at Leicester this season and if he can carry on where he finished tonight, being partnered with Doyley it puts us in with a great shout.”
RIDER OF THE NIGHT
As has been the case on many occasions in 2022 it was Doyle who was the star for Ipswich, scoring 15+1.
WHAT IT MEANS
With the play-offs already completed and the champions crowned, it quite literally means nothing at this stage.
UP NEXT
The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches pairing travels to Leicester on Tuesday 25th October for the fifth round of the Premiership Pairs. Tickets can be purchased on the gate and in advance here.
The ‘Tru Mix’ Witches complete their Premiership season on Monday evening as they travel to face Sheffield. With the play-offs already completed and Belle Vue having lifted the Premiership title, there is now nothing riding on this fixture despite both sides sitting level on points at the top of the table with one fixture remaining. The strange scenario, if nothing else, represents a chance for Ipswich to end their league campaign on a better note after their disappointing play-off semi-final defeat.
The Suffolk side welcome back Erik Riss to the team for the first time since his ankle injury in July. Rohan Tungate was signed as an injury replacement but now that the German is fit, he retakes his place in the line-up at number four. Number eight Danyon Hume is not fit enough to be in contention and is still recovering from his collarbone injury. Lee Complin guests for Paul Starke at number six who broke down en route to the fixture. The Witches were beaten by eight points on their visit to Owlerton earlier in the season in a meeting that was abandoned after 13 heats and will hope for a better result on this occasion and a full night of racing.
FROM THE BOSS
Ipswich ‘Tru Mix’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…
“It is a dead rubber, but it is what it is. The fixtures need to be completed and the boys want a pay day before the winter. As a team we have got to approach it knowing the season didn’t finish well in the play-offs, so if we can finish the league campaign off with a win, finish top and then go on and win the Pairs competition then we can finish the season on a happier note.
“When Erik got injured and we had the situation with Ben (Barker) it really disrupted our season massively. He is back and is riding well now and we have put him back in the team with the view of him doing the Belle Vue round of the Pairs as well, so he will get a couple of run outs with us. He is somebody we would like to keep in the side next year as well if possible.”
THE TIGERS
Sheffield finished as runners-up in this year’s Premiership play-offs after being narrowly beaten by Belle Vue in the final over two legs. The Tigers do still have a chance of picking up some silverware in 2022 though and hold a healthy 12-point lead over King’s Lynn going into the home leg of their League Cup final.
The hosts are without Tobiasz Musielak and Kyle Howarth for this fixture, with Wolves’ Sam Masters guesting for Musielak and rider replacement in operation at number four for Howarth.
